Why Can't We Just Use The BBS For Chat?

Adding my own answer to the panoply of chat solutions, I would like to suggest that we’re all nerdy enough here to handle just logging on to the BBS and chatting from there:

No moderator?!?!?! My gawd, man!

I finally telnetted my way over to the BBS today and created an account. Something hung for a few moments and I managed to tell it that my screen was capable of 272727 lines of text.

Anyway, yeah, I’m cool with the BBS.

For Lunduke community, I still prefer this forum, that has many benefits. BBS has limited amount of available lines.

But I need my Chrome frame webkit based chat client for rich text formatting and inline images and

Ok I’ll stop.

(edited to hide my age, Chrome frame is definitely not a thing any more)

@xet7 you seem to be confused. You said the same to others who were suggesting a chat augmentation.

Let me see if I can clarify: chat rooms are not message boards.

You use a message board to create persistent messages like this one, that can be addressed asynchronously, over long periods of time.

You use a chat room to engage in extemporaneous, ad-hoc, synchronous conversations in real-time with living people who are responding to you immediately.

Each tool serves a different purpose. Some people want to write messages like this. Other people want to occasional talk to a real person online. Both use cases have their value.

Well said. At this stage in life I don’t usually have the time to sit and chat in real time, but occasionally it is nice to have that option. I’m fine with whatever. BBS is cool, Discourse chat feature is cool. I’d prefer to not have to deal with Discord, but if that’s the direction we go that’s fine too.

@gmgauthier

For chat, I prefer IRC, like at Libera.Chat I’m at many channels with HexChat. For example, there are IRC channels #wekan for https://wekan.github.io , #secretchronicles for https://secretchronicles.org , etc, those I maintain.

To be honest, I’m not really a huge fan of Discord either. When it comes to chat, I prefer dirt-simple tools like IRC.

So say we all. Hey, what about that thing I shared on Locals a while back to run your own AIM server? We could all chat from out 386 PCs running Windows 3.1 or newer! I’m only kind of sort of kidding, lol.

As do I. Since you know what IRC is, then it should be clear what we’re trying to sort out here. Which is certainly not suggesting a new message board.

Currently at Libera.Chat I’m trying to configure #lunduke that I did setup previously.

Then perhaps we could settle on IRC if @lunduke is willing to host us?

I’d prefer to use the IRC client of my choice (irssi) on a remote box rather than having to use a local BBS client.

If we set up an IRC, then I could run the client on my home machine, and just ssh in from work (allowing me to avoid putting anything on my work machine).

See, guys? THIS COULD WORK!

It is a bit clunky. I logged in, and I got into chat. You can’t play games when you’re in chat. And if you’re idle in chat it disconnects you. It’s certainly a fun novelty but I am not thrilled with its overall utility.

I wonder how hard it would be to create a bridge between BBS chat and an IRC channel?

dirt-simple??
Not sure if that is a compliment or not!

Or run an irc client in the bbs as a door, then the bbs and irc will be natively linked.

It’s easier to access this forum from work. I’d have to wait until home to use BBS. Why? Because.
