I’m guessing that four total Categories would work fairly well, with various Tags (like “Linux” specific). The UltimateBBS that I knew had 9 (?) Categories, with One being “Super Friends” (Private - Special Group). “World” was for any login.
“Public Square” would be the ONE Forum which the “World” can Read. Three or four other forums would be whatever. Probably common topics here would be like:
“Forum FAQ and Rules”
“About the _____ Forum”
“openSUSE and RedHat Should ______!!!”
Updated: Maybe “The Protest” for Rants About Current Events that we REALLY Hate. No Malice for Members, No Threats, just a place to vent. Essentially the main Forum for Politics… (Deprecated) Never mind “Fight Club”, since that could indicate a place with Bad Behavior.
I am more for a private-by-default approach to topics with the ability to make the topic public (if possible, and this should be clearly shown for each topic), but this is a good idea too.
Whatever happens, I do hope that @lunduke addresses this quickly.
I hope he is not planning on leaving it world readable as an advertisement to join.
That is the problem with having our community centered around a single person’s business; his interests as a business person, and ours, as a community, are not necessarily the same.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m guessing that “Lunduke” can look at the Server Statistics to get an understanding of the traffic/activity here. I’ll bet traffic is still “Low Bandwidth.”
Bots - probably not allowed to “Index” Forum Contents.
Locals.com Users - essentially “Anonymous”, but should be friendly.
Others - Found the Lunduke Forum on Google or Bing? Who knows.
My two cents* as a relative newbie to this community: I’m not so sure the publicly-viewable forum needs to exist at all. I think if we’re posting here, the intended audience is generally going to be just the other supporting members. I could however see a public category being useful if it was going to have a specific purpose, such as for tutorials, longer-form blog posts or collections of information almost like a wiki.
If there’s any really spicy content happening in here that might make for a good plug for membership, Lunduke could always screenshot it (with the author’s permission) and share in a video.
*Two physical pennies made of actual copper, that is. So at least they’re appreciating in value.
Keep the Locals page for public consumption and this forum for paying members only. It is important to have a publicly accessible site so that it can attract new members otherwise the “community” will stagnate and eventually die.
