SQL got a new lease on popularity with the web. It just coincidentally happened to be a great solution for a problem websites had: a data store that could handle lots of concurrent requests. It was a great example of New Jersey Style in the late 90s. There were conceptually-pure ways in progress to write web apps someday, that all got blown out of the water by “lol let’s just query MySQL from Perl and print some html tags.”
