[Changed] [Poll] Increase Edit Timeframe

Should we be able to edit posts for longer, and if so, how much longer? Remember, edit history is stored. It seems to be 1-2 days currently for most users. It seems that, once you reach trust level 2, you can edit for 30 days (Thanks @randrews). Leave your thoughts below if you want. \(ツ)/

I think a longer limit would be great for something like this topic, where I can continue to add onto it in a compact form so everything I found useful or interesting is in one place. The same would then be possible for others.

I prefer posts to be set in stone, as if they were emails.

I admit, I haven’t been following close enough. I don’t recall the current limit. Not that I think it’s an option, but I would be in favor of a short time to edit to fix typos and the like.

I would also favor appending latter to add updates or to call out a comment that “answers” a question posed. This isn’t to change the original post. It common though in articles to have updates and in question posts to call out the solution for when someone else has the same question.

It seems to me like 1-2 days.

<MyThoughts>
I just find it useful for topics like my Awesome Open Source one so everyone can keep their useful/interesting projects together in one reply each. For instance, in this reply (linked), I am unable add anything else to it whereas I find it would be useful in this case. As I add on more projects in that topic, I will need to post new replies (rather than use the same one) which will only include 1-3 topics each. Without an increase, something like it becomes a bit more difficult to find everything that one person finds useful (you can probably still use search filters).

I think if you allow editing a post, it probably should be editable indefinitely, maybe even longer.

:roll_eyes: I often make three or four edits to a post, just to improve appearances to my own liking.

  • I guess the thing to avoid is having Reply using Quote and the Original Material has been removed. :man_mechanic: Mostly, I’d say edit all you want, but Revisionist Debate would be in poor taste.

I put a week, but I would be ok with infinity as well. The forum software exposes the initial post, and so there is no hiding what you said. However, if you made a typo, as I often do, then it just allows you to go int there and clean it up.

Same here, I make 1-4 edits to a post usually. Again, I find it useful for something like my Awesome Open Source topic.

You can increase it yourself by being at trust level 2: Understanding Discourse Trust Levels

I’m gonna have to change the poll now lol. Thanks

Well, maybe it could still be increased anyways for each tier besides a new account. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hope you guys don’t mind voting again. I added a second and third poll thanks to randrews making a point about other levels.
